On Reading (or Not Reading) a Crime Novel

I started reading "The Snowman" yesterday. One third way through it, I was thinking of not finishing it. The book is not bad, but it has such a resemblance to "Silence of the Lamb". I had a deja vu feeling the whole time I was reading it. (The detective character is definitely not as vivid as Wallander or Lisbeth Salander.) Nowadays I have less patience for "me too" novels (when you are older, you have less time to kill). So, should I abandon the book?

Alas, that's the problem with reading a crime (or detective) novel. Once you start it, you are in a moral dilemma. Now I have seen a serial killer loose in the book. If I don't finish it, it's like I let the serial killer out. No, can't do that. Justice needs to be done. No matter how time consuming it is, I will have to finish it and see the serial killer being caught (or killed). Then order is restored and I fulfill my moral obligation.

Sigh, from now on I will definitely think twice before I start any new crime novel in the future.

P.S. 50 pages more I like "The Snowman" better. I guess it takes time to break ice with new characters.
